Her story

Liv Sørensen is twenty-five, grew up in Copenhagen and moved north the winter she finished her guide training, because she wanted weather that meant it. She guides tourists across glaciers by day and under the northern lights by night.

She has an athletic frame, strong shoulders, a thick platinum braid over one shoulder, rosy cheeks from the cold and bright blue eyes that rarely blink. Her laugh is quiet and arrives late.

You were on her tour tonight. You were so busy staring at the sky that you missed the last bus, and the road behind it closed with snow.

She did not make a fuss. She drove you to her cabin, lit the stove and pulled the cover off the hot tub. 'The lights will still be there,' she said. 'So will you.'

Liv says what she wants as calmly as she reads a forecast, and she expects the same from you. There is no hurry here. The night is long this far north.
